Mastering Tai Chi Form 24 : Applications with Double-Clubbell, Cane, and Long Staff
Four routines in one book! Mastering Tai Chi Form 24 and Applications, exploring each posture in depth with clarity and purpose, and then use it as a structural template for applying weapon techniques. By preserving the structure and posture names of the original Form 24, this book enables students to deepen their internal practice without the distraction of learning new choreography of a weapon form. Instead, the familiar routine becomes a versatile foundation for integrating weapons such as the double-clubbell, cane, and long staff, each adding its own distinct “flavor” to the form.
The book opens with detailed, illustrated instruction on the bare-hand routine, uniquely emphasizing Tai Chi’s core philosophy of Yin-Yang harmony and offering layered insights into your practice from three interconnected perspectives: 1) wellness to cultivate internal energy, stimulate meridians, support organ health, and release stagnation for self-healing; 2) fitness to develop your body’s spring-like qualities, such as elasticity, compressibility, twistability, and structural integrity; 3) martial application to understand how each posture expresses practical techniques like redirecting force, uprooting, joint control, or striking. This holistic framework honors the depth of Tai Chi while making it accessible and meaningful to practitioners of all backgrounds.
Tai Chi weapon routines often differ significantly from their bare-hand origins. This book offers a fresh, integrated approach, grafting weapon training onto the familiar structure of Form 24, much like grafting different fruits onto the same tree. The result is a richer, more connected practice that enhances both understanding and self-cultivation.
Whether your focus is health, martial arts, or teaching, this book will support your journey toward the true embodiment of Tai Chi Form 24. This book includes four complete illustrated routines: Simplified Tai Chi Form 24; Tai Chi Double Clubbell/Bang in Form 24; Tai Chi Cane in Form 24; Tai Chi Long Staff in Form 24

Tai Chi Hiking Staff Illustrated (Bastón de Senderismo de Tai Chi) – (Bilingual: English and Spanish)
This book explores two comprehensive practices, illustrated with over 200 photos featuring solid and dotted lines along with arrows to clearly demonstrate the directions of the staff, hand, and foot movements. To reach a broader audience, we’ve included bilingual text (English and Spanish), ensuring the posture instructions are accessible to learners worldwide. Whether you’re seeking physical vitality, inner balance, or martial arts training, the Tai Chi Hiking Staff practice offers a versatile, holistic approach to health and self-defense. The Tai Chi Hiking Staff draws from traditional Chinese martial arts and Qigong, incorporating techniques from Whip Stick (山西鞭杆), Shaolin Stick (少林棍), Broadsword (单刀), Taoist Tiger Tail Staff (道家虎尾鞭), Chen Tai Chi Guandao (陈氏太极关刀), Chen Style Tai Chi Pear Blossom Spear and White Ape Staff (陈氏太极梨花枪夹白猿棍), Beggar Sect Rabid-dog Beating Staff (丐帮打狗棒法), Five Animal Frolics (五禽戏). These practices are enriched by the teachings of my Shifu, Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei (陳正雷), Shibo Chen Xiaowang (陳小旺), Zhu Tiancai (朱天才), and other esteemed masters, such as Zang Hongxian (臧洪先), Abraham Liu, Dan Lee, Professor Li Deyin (李德印), and Professor Yu Dinghai (虞定海), who was my PhD advisor at Shanghai University of Sport.

108 Answers to Tai Chi Practice
“You share something amazing we would never be able to find out anywhere else. It often fills in another little blank space in my understanding of tai chi. You do have special knowledge to pass on through your teaching, your videos and now your books.
The structure of the book is very professional–and I do not say that lightly. The forward is brilliant and the Introduction does everything an introduction should. I started to read page by page and then as your forward suggested began dipping into topics. When I began reading Question 22 on weight shifting in Brush Knee, I thought I would know what you would say as I had heard you talk about this topic before and as you know I learned the 24 before the 108 and struggled with this initially. Jesse, your answer was so thorough and so deep. I knew much of this information but had never put all these little parts together. You begin with historical context which so few tai chi players could do. The photographs you use are so powerful and underscore your points. And your very last point about Part Wild Horse’s Mane and experimenting with the weight shift to generate a spiral force to the hand immediately made sense to me and gave me an even deeper understanding.
I find Part 1 very valuable as the more I understand, the easier it is for me to simplify for those new to tai chi. Part II is of great interest to me and Part IV I find very helpful. Even though I have no martial arts background, when you demonstrate applications for us, it always frees me–I suddenly understand why one hand is higher or lower. It makes sense and I do not need to think raise this hand to this angle–I just know I don’t want someone to be able to hit me in the face!
I had planned to read straight through the book (and I will eventually read all of it) but for now I plan to just dip into it and read a couple of questions before my daily practice. Today I will be thinking about #25 as I practice Wu. I am also glad you address all of the styles and Push Hands instead of separating this information into multiple books. You have the experience and special knowledge to think and write about the commonalities and well as the differences so we can all deepen our practice”

Practical Tai Chi Training – A 9-Stage Method for Mastery
“Practical Tai Chi Training: A 9-Stage Method for Mastery is the Magnum Opus concerning everything that anyone might want to know about Tai Chi training. Dr. Jesse Tsao takes the reader from great depths never plunged to acmes never ascended.
It has been almost 29 years now since I first started my foray into the art of Tai Chi. After reading Dr. Jesse Tsao’s book, an honest evaluation of my intermittent attempts during all these years to learn Tai Chi, I am at best entering stage 3 out of the 9 stages. I wish I had this book at the beginning of my training. My path would be radically different and I would be at a much higher stage.
Simply stated, this is an excellent book like no other! Excellent layout, editing, clear, precise, concise methodology, and many clear diagrams. A complete description of Tai Chi concatenating body positions, weightings, movements, Yin/Yang, breathing, energy flow, TCM, health, weapons, and so much more into one complete practice. Despite many hours of reading this book I have barely started to grasp the full intricacies and depths of Tai Chi training as a whole. A person may want multiple copies as they may wear-out their first. I understand why the old masters required years of intense study from students before they could advance and secrets were revealed. From beginning stances, how to walking, how to breath, and energy flow, no detail seems to be left out. The information in this excellent book is so replete it can be overwhelming with everything that is involved and revealed. I see why a lifetime could be spent practicing this art.
All journeys start with a first step, however, a wise person considers whether a journey should be commenced. If the milestones and the final destination is not cognizable, failure is potentiated. With Jesse’s 9-Stage Method for Mastery, the journey of Tai Chi is mapped out with well defined and clear milestones. With this book every individual can clearly discern if they should actuate the journey, and how far down the road they wish to travel. I highly recommend this definitive book to everyone from the neophyte to the consummate Tai Chi professional.”

Mastering Tai Chi Cane – for Health & Self-Defense
The cane has been used as a self-defense weapon for centuries. But it is more than just a weapon or a walking aid—it is a useful tool to practice the ancient Chinese art of tai chi and gain all the benefits of relaxation, health, and wellness for students of any age or fitness level. For the very first time, Master Jesse Tsao brings his fifty years of tai chi practice and training, combined with his PhD in Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Education, to this comprehensive guide to mastering the tai chi cane with routines he has created.
Rooted in the Taoist Eight Immortals legends, this book takes you through the steps of tai chi cane stretch and self-massage to increase flexibility, loosen tight muscles, and prepare the body for daily activities as well as stimulating energy points to open the body’s blockages and flush out stagnation and toxins to promote self-healing. Routine I blends the softer flow and circular movements of the popular Yang-style tai chi for stress management and personal fitness. And for students looking for training in cane self-defense, Routine II is based on the fast and vigorous practice of traditional Chen-style Cannon Fist that mixes robust leaps with explosive strikes—ideal for diehard martial artists.
With more than 300 photographs and illustrations, Mastering Tai Chi Cane for Health & Self-Defense provides clear, step-by-step instructions for each posture followed by key points for mastery, making it a perfect manual for beginners while the in-depth content will be invaluable to martial artists and tai chi instructors.

Tai Chi Bang: Eight-Immortal Flute
This is the updated 2nd Edition with my new creations added. I revised this book to reward my long time readers and supporters worldwide. The old version was created in 2012, it has been ten years since then, and there have been some changes based on the practical teaching experience. Plus, this new version included my new research works on Seated (wheelchair) Tai Chi Bang Therapy, a special design for Clever Care Health Plan, and Tai Chi Bang for Self-massage. This is a much clearer and enriched new version. I have informed the BN Publishing and they have agreed to remove the old version from the market immediately.
Tai chi bang combines meditative self-healing and self-defense fundamental practice, and is based on characteristic tai chi postures. Tai chi bang provides an object to focus on between the palms, bonding the two hands as they move together, making it easy and fun for beginners to feel qi (氣), the vital energy. Some people who find it difficult to quiet their minds find this practice especially effective in gathering attention. Holding the stick with both palms helps them concentrate and be in the moment. The movement of the stick imitates the movement of the qi inside the body. It relieves stress, gathers in fresh energy, rejuvenates the body and spirit, brings inner calm, and promotes qi and blood circulation. This form was created during my doctoral research in Shanghai Sport University. I combined my hometown countryside meditation practice, from the nearby taoist Penglai Temple, with Chen style tai chi silk reeling, and local martial arts.
Seated (wheelchair) Tai Chi Bang Therapy is designed for people with physical difficulty standing, or recovery from medical treatment. You can still practice to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome or hand arthritis. The stick provides you with a focal point to help with hand-eye coordination. The twisting moves can stimulate energy circulation in your fingers and wrists, prevent frozen shoulders, and improve the elasticity of the tendons around your elbows. It stretches and tones your muscles, improves the flexibility and strength of your spine, and prevents lower back pain. The practice is adapted from the tai chi joint locking techniques of qin-na, a traditional secret training approach for developing spiral inner energy. Tai Chi Bang for Self-Massage introduces to you an easy practice for body conditioning and energy enhancement. It improves meridian channel circulation by massaging major energy points and inner organs, also loosening muscles, tendons, and joints. It is simple yet effective in relaxation and disease prevention. No need to identify exact locations of energy points–just use the bang to massage the area.
